Sam Beall
In April 2003, Sam Beall took the helm as the proprietor of Blackberry Farm. Sam grew up on the Farm, watching, waiting and dreaming of how he could build upon the legacy of his parents and make Blackberry Farm the world-renowned destination it is today. Sam studied at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the California Culinary Academy, with stints at prestigious establishments like Thomas Keller's The French Laundry, Peggy Smith’s Cowgirl Creamery and The Ritz-Carlton, honing his culinary expertise.
During his time in California, Sam worked to establish relationships with vintners at some of the best wineries in the country. He would ride his bike throughout Napa Valley and Sonoma County, carrying brochures from his family’s home, Blackberry Farm. In the late 1990s, trying to convince a vintner to send their wine to Tennessee was a tall order, but Sam was relentless in his pursuit.
When Sam returned to Blackberry Farm in 2001 with his wife, Mary Celeste, and their first daughter, he worked in all the departments at the Farm, wanting to understand every detail of the property.
As the new proprietor, Sam brought a renewed focus on food, wine, adventure and holistic living. Under Sam, the Farm expanded its gardens, expanded the wine cellar, built new categories of guest accommodations, increased activity programming and introduced two new restaurants, The Barn at Blackberry Farm® and the Dogwood.
Under Sam's leadership, Blackberry Farm witnessed significant growth, earning top accolades, including three James Beard Awards, igniting landmark event programming and creating the property’s cycling program. He built upon the Farm’s legacy of conservation efforts and expanded the Farm's acreage to 4,200 acres, and he established the Blackberry Farm Brewery and the Blackberry Farm Foundation.
If Sam envisioned something, he made it happen, alongside his ever-growing team. His dedication to detail and innovation led to continuous expansion. Inspired by Napa's wine culture, Sam built a wine cellar to house Blackberry Farm's remarkable wine collection, solidifying its status as a premier destination for food, wine and luxury experiences. Sam had a knack for drawing in young talent, and some of the team members he hired remain at Blackberry today, celebrating more than 20 years of service.
On February 25, 2016, Sam’s life was tragically cut short in a skiing accident. Mary Celeste stepped into the role of proprietor and continues to uphold Sam's vision and dreams, alongside the Beall family and the Blackberry team. Ultimately, Sam's most enduring legacy is his family — Mary Celeste and their five children. They continue to cherish and honor his memory at the place he dedicated his life's work to — Blackberry Farm.
